ENDWELL, N.Y. — Ryan Newman has been hired to drive the iconic Mystic Missile modified in the May 18 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
Nine-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour winner Tim Connolly, recently sidelined from driving following his third spinal surgery, has hired the 2008 Daytona 500 winner to drive the car on NASCAR’s All-Star weekend.
The Mystic Missile name carries deep heritage, originally made famous by legendary car owner Bob Garbarino, who fielded some of the most respected cars in modified racing history. Out of respect for Mr. Garbarino’s legacy, Connolly personally reached out to discuss the upcoming event—and was met with full support.
“Bob was thrilled with the idea, and that meant a lot to me,” said Connolly. “The Mystic Missile has always stood for excellence, class, and fierce competition. Ryan fits that mold. He’s a racer’s racer — smart, tough, and incredibly experienced.”
Newman, who has made select appearances in modifieds over the years, is enthusiastic about the opportunity.
“I’ve always loved driving these cars,” said Newman. “To do it at North Wilkesboro, in a car with this kind of legacy and with the support of great partners, is something I’m really looking forward to.”
The team will campaign a Fury chassis powered by Yates Racing Engines, dressed in a bold yellow and black livery carrying the traditional No. v4 and Mystic Missile aesthetic.
