After a learning experience in his first Tulsa Shootout last year inside the Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Center, Brexton Busch returned to the famed event with knowledge and confidence.
The son of two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch starred throughout the weekend in the Junior Sprint category as he enjoyed a flag-to-flag rout of the field on Saturday night to notch his first Golden Driller trophy.
“That was awesome, so glad to be here right now and win,” Brexton Busch smiled. “I’ve been watching all the races from last year to get it here. We’ve won all these races to get here and it’s awesome to win this race.”
The driver of the No. 18b certainly made major strides from his first event in Tulsa last season, where he finished 12th in the feature.
While Busch never relinquished the lead, close calls were numerous throughout the 20-lap main event.
On a restart with six laps to go, Busch briefly dove below the brim and slid up the race track, which appeared to keep the door open for challenges behind him.
“I was definitely very lucky to not get into some lapped traffic,” Busch explained. “I was a little worried about that, but still just awesome to win.
“I thought on that one time on lap 14 right there whenever Eli (Holden) had to pull in and Jaxon (Wittmer) was right behind me, I thought I gave it away when I hit the brim and went up.
“So, I’m glad that I didn’t.”
