Lucas Oil Founder Forrest Lucas Dies At 83

Forrest Lucas was as well known for his support of the motorsports industry as he was for as the founder of Lucas Oil. He died Saturday at the age of 83.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our founder, Forrest Lucas,” said the company in a statement. “Forrest’s boundless drive for Lucas Oil, his generosity and love for his family, friends, and community defined his life. While we grieve this tremendous loss, we take comfort in knowing his legacy will continue to inspire our team and all who knew him.”

Lucas, who founded Lucas Oil Products in 1989, was born in rural Indiana in 1942 and worked as a truck driver before starting his business that would grow to become a brand known around the world.

Under his direction, Lucas Oil entered the world of motorsports and was — and continues to be — a significant sponsor of racing series, race tracks, teams and drivers.

Lucas Oil has supported the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for decades. The company is also well known for its Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., and as the sponsor of Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

The Lucas Oil name has also stretched into other sports, including its sponsorship of the arena in Indianapolis known as Lucas Oil Stadium.

Forrest Lucas’ son, Morgan, who is a former NHRA drag racer, is now president of Lucas Oil.
