ALGER, Wash. — Season Championship Night Two at Skagit Speedway saw fireworks in the sky and on the track, as Colin Mackey came away with his first Hill’s Meat Company 410 Sprint Car win on Washington Trust Bank night at Skagit Speedway.
On the final night of the year for the Hill’s Meat Company Sprint Cars, Colin Mackey won in one of the closest main event finishes of the past two decades.
Mackey’s first victory came after leading all 30 laps of the feature, fending off a Tyler Thompson slide job on the final lap, drag racing him out of turn four and beating him to the checkered flag by .047 seconds to take the victory.
Trey Starks sewed up the season title with a fifth place run. Joining Mackey and Thompson on the podium was Justin Youngquist.
Jeff Westergard punctuated his season championship in the Sportsman Sprints. Westergard took the lead from eventual runner up Jailynn Serrano on lap 28 and raced the rest of the way to the feature win ahead of Serrano and Derek Holmwood.
Championship drama was the name of the game in The Skagit Casino Resort IMCA Modifieds. As the group prepared for next week’s Survive the 55, three drivers came into the night hunting the season championship – Cole Logan, Rory Smith and Tyson Blood.
Logan needed a 6th place or better finish to lock in the title, but early in the race he got into a three car pileup that sent him to the pits for the repairs.
This opened the door for Smith and Blood who were racing up the field and had already made it into the top five when Logan had to pit. Cole would make it back out and restart 14th while Rick Smith and Ben Gunderson battled for the lead. Rick led the first seven laps before Gunderson got by, giving him the top spot on lap 8. Ben would race the rest of the way to take his second main event win in a row.
Behind him, Rory worked his way into second place and Blood up to third, putting pressure on Logan to make it back through the field. A mid race collision caught Logan and would send him backwards a second time around halfway, but Logan bore down and re-passed his way through the field with a wounded race car, driving up to 5th place by the checkered flag, securing his first Skagit Speedway title.
