American visitor Cory Eliason is poised to claim the Western Australian Speedweek title after dominant performances in rounds five and six of the series.
The visiting driver has now claimed four of the six features.
Having set the quickest qualifying lap in his group in the Diamond Bay Motorsports No. 26 at Bunbury Speedway on Jan. 14, Eliason progressed through the heats to claim a front-row position on the final grid.
An early stoppage involving Tyler Courtney (Monte Farms), Brad Maiolo (LJM Racing) and Jason Kendrick (Triple M) was the first of many in the feature. Throughout, Eliason remained a front runner, eventually winning from David Priolo (DP Motorsports/Barbagello Racing) and Trent Pigdon (TD Granny Flats & Modular Homes). Courtney was eighth, one place ahead of Zearfoss (Goldstar Transport).
Racing at the Allwest Plant Hire Ellenbrook Speedway on the edge of Perth’s picturesque Swan River valley a week earlier, Eliason also triumphed in the Diamond Bay Motorsports machine.
Eliason qualified fastest with a 15.224-second run around the 560-yard oval, ahead of James Inglis with 15.330 seconds, Courtney with 15.341 seconds and Zearfoss with 15.356 seconds.
With a fourth placing in his heat, and a win in the A dash, Eliason qualified for the front row of the final.
Courtney lined up alongside his compatriot in the Monte Farms Maxim after winning his heat and the dash races.
The best placed Australian on the grid was Inglis in the LJS Equipment/DeVil Race Karts sprinter on position three, inside Geraldton driver Callum Williamson in the Avalon Group No. 3.
Eliason won the start and led Courtney in what looked like an incident-free final until Zearfoss spun in the main straight on lap 26.
Eliason again led from the restart, ahead of Courtney, Inglis, Williamson and Daniel Harding in the Harding Racing Adragroup/Cowara Contractors car.
A few laps later separate incidents involving Robbie Farr (JPM Racing) and Daniel Harding; and David Priolo brought up the red lights.
Eliason was again fast away at the restart, running strongly to the checkered flag in the remainder of the 35-lap feature.
Courtney was second, ahead of Inglis, Williamson and Harding.
With the final round at Perth’s Motorplex on Jan. 21, Eliason leads the series with 892 points, 32 points ahead of Courtney.
