Zane Smith Receives $50,000 Fine

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR Cup Series driver Zane Smith has been fined $50,000 for an incident following Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway.

Smith was sanctioned after ramming his Ford into the Chevrolet driven by Carson Hocevar after the conclusion of the race.

The penalty was issued via Section 10.5.2.5a in the NASCAR Rule Book, which states that “any violations compromising Event or participant safety will be addressed on a case-by-case basis with the highest level of seriousness.”

NASCAR officials also cited Section 4.4a in the rule book, which provides potential penalty options and guidelines of “general examples of behavior that may fall into certain Penalty levels.”

The post-race incident stemmed from a lap-296 incident that involved Hocevar, Ross Chastain, Smith and Josh Berry.

It is the latest incident between the two drivers who have a long-standing feud.
