The 110th Indianapolis 500 came down to a one-lap shootout — two and a half miles to decide the winner of the world’s most famous race.
Felix Rosenqvist drove what may be regarded as the greatest lap in the long history of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
Rosenqvist had led much of the final third of the race after his Meyer Shank Racing team opted for an alternative fuel strategy, but a pair of late-race yellow flags set up a one-lap dash to the checkered flag with Rosenqvist’s teammate Marcus Armstrong in the lead, Team Penske’s David Malukas second and Rosenqvist third.
As Malukas blew past Armstrong for the lead Rosenqvist powered to the outside of Armstrong and kept his foot in the gas gaining huge momentum that pushed his Honda powered machine even with Malukas as the duo drag raced to the finish.
Rosenqvist finished a mere .0233 seconds ahead of Malukas. In the closest finish in the history of the race.
