A.J. Foyt Racing’s outlook entering a season hasn’t looked this bright in several years.
With two of the NTT IndyCar Series’ top young talents, Santino Ferrucci and David Malukas, steering the two-car ship, the legendary team eyes to play the role of spoiler, or perhaps even more, this year.
Ahead of the March 2 season opener on the streets of St. Petersburg (Fla.), here’s a look at each driver:
Key Losses: Sting Ray Robb (Juncos Hollinger Racing)
Key Additions: David Malukas (Meyer Shank Racing)
No. 14 — Santino Ferrucci
Last year was a career-best season for Santino Ferrucci aboard the famed No. 14 Chevrolet for A.J. Foyt.
The 26-year-old snagged 11 top-10 finishes, including four straight in the final four races. It was Ferrucci’s best points finish as well (ninth) as he scored his first career pole at Oregon’s Portland Int’l Raceway.
With a strong springboard to lean on, alongside a blossoming alliance with Team Penske, Ferrucci may be a dark horse to contend for a championship.
No. 4 — David Malukas
New to the team this year is David Malukas, who was in need of a fresh start.
Malukas departed from Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team early last year after the team decided to release him due to an on-going wrist injury he suffered in a mountain bike accident, which sidelined him for the start of the year.
After fully healing from injury, Malukas wheeled Meyer Shank Racing’s No. 66 Honda for the final 10 races, where he scored two top-10 finishes.
With a resurgent organization behind him, Malukas could be in for a breakout season.
