Walters Ends URSS Skid With 81 Score

WICHITA, Kan. — For the first time in nearly two years, Koby Walters is back in United Rebel Sprint Series victory lane.

Walters survived a wild night filled with multiple red flags, restarts, and heavy attrition Saturday night at 81 Speedway to capture the Salute To Service Sprint Car Showdown, earning his first career victory at the historic Wichita oval while collecting his eighth career United Rebel Sprint Series triumph.

The win was Walters’ first since July of 2024 when he scored a victory during the WheatShocker Nationals at RPM Speedway in Hays.

Thirty-two competitors signed into competition for one of the largest fields of the season, and Walters showed speed from the moment he unloaded.

After qualifying second overall in his group with a 15.364-second lap, Walters advanced from fourth to third in Heat 4 before winning the Vehicle Upfit Solutions Dash to secure the pole position for the 30-lap main event.

The feature quickly turned into a survival test.

Chaos erupted immediately when Ty Williams flipped on the opening lap along the backstretch, bringing out the first red flag before the field could even complete the opening circuit.

Following the restart, Walters maintained command while battles throughout the top ten intensified behind him.

The race saw another major stoppage around lap 13 when Whit Gastineau and Johnny Boos tangled entering turn three, sending both cars flipping simultaneously and forcing another lengthy red flag period.

Later in the event, Jon Freeman added to the list of casualties after suffering a flip of his own in turn three, creating yet another stoppage in a feature that struggled to find rhythm throughout much of the night.

Despite four total red flags and numerous restarts, Walters remained perfect when it mattered most.

Each restart brought new challengers, but nobody could find a way around the No. 33 machine as Walters completed all 30 laps out front.

While Walters controlled the race, much of the action behind him centered around several impressive charges through the field.

Ryder Laplante delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, advancing from 11th starting position to finish second.

Jeremy Huish produced perhaps the drive of the night.

After transferring through the B Feature earlier in the evening, Huish started 17th in the main event and charged through traffic to finish third, gaining 14 positions.

Kameron Key continued his consistent season with a fourth-place finish while Taylor Velasquez completed the top five.

Conner Thomas also turned heads by advancing from 21st to sixth.
