YUMA, Ariz. — It’s not often that you hear of a race track reopening. It’s really unusual to hear a track is going to be promoted by a brother-and-sister team.
That’s what is happening at Cocopah Speedway located at the south edge of Yuma, Arizona.
Travis and Leann Peery have signed a contract to promote the three-eighths-mile dirt track that will resume racing in October of this year.
Travis became a race car fan the day he learned to walk. His neighbor had an outlaw late model in his garage, so Travis started hanging around the garage at a young age.
Racing for 20 years, Travis now builds cars and supports his sons. Ryan, age 21, races an IMCA modified and Blake, age 17, runs an IMCA Sport Mod.
Besides racing, Travis has done track prep at numerous tracks. He preps Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, Oregon, regularly and also did various other tracks for High Limit Racing.
In 2024, Peery promoted Yreka Speedway until summer wildfires led to the track closing when the fairgrounds became home for firefighters. The following year, an unacceptable fairgrounds offer to promote the track was turned down.
The Cocopah Speedway will race from October to March or April and will also have various non-racing events after the racing season.
A rare December outdoor race will fall the first weekend of the month with various divisions including IMCA Northern Sport Mods.
This is the second return of Cocopah Speedway to action. The track was closed for 10 years during which the Cocopah Tribe purchased the facility in 2005.
The Tribe made many improvements to the track before reopening in 2010.
