Disqualifications Headline World Series Opener

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Disqualifications were the name of the game on the opening night of the 59th World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway.

Carson Brown inherited the super late model victory after William Sawalich was disqualified during post-race technical inspection, while Hunter Wright was declared the pro late model winner after Conner Jones was disqualified.

Sawalich battled Cole Butcher for the victory in the super late model race with the two tangling with five laps remaining. However, Sawalich powered away from the incident and raced to the checkered flag.

He was disqualified during technical inspection for exceeding maximum tread width on the front tires. Brown was declared the winner.

Butcher was credited with second, while Derek Griffith, George Phillips and Conner Jones completed the top five.

Jones crossed the finish line first in the pro late model feature, but was disqualified because of a carburetor infraction. That elevated Wright to the winner’s spot. Jimmy Renfrew Jr. was scored second.

Earl Beckner Jr. won the sportsman feature, while Brad Bowman topped the Florida modified feature.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will headline Saturday’s card.
