Shane van Gisbergen did something during the Chicago Street Race weekend that only on NASCAR driver had previously accomplished. The 36-year-old New Zealand driver won Xfinity Series and Cup Series races from the pole at the same race track on back-to-back days. Kyle Busch previously accomplished the achievement at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2016.
Van Gisbergen began his weekend sweep by driving his JR Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet around teammate Conner Zilisch late in The Loop 110 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series on the 2.2-mile street course.
Starting his Trackhouse Racing No. 88 from the pole on Sunday, van Gisbergen was the class of the field throughout and held off Ty Gibbs to win on the streets of Chicago for the second time in as many days. It was also his second Cup Series victory in three races in Chicago after he won the inaugural event in his very first NASCAR start in 2023.
Van Gisbergen also won on the road course at Mexico City earlier this season. Another road
course — Sonoma Raceway — is next on the Cup Series schedule.
