INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosier native Chase Briscoe turned the fastest lap during qualifying Saturday afternoon for Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Briscoe drove his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to a lap of 49.136 seconds (181.165 mph) around the historic 2.5-mile track to earn his series-best fifth pole of the season.
Briscoe’s run late in the session, edged fellow Toyota driver Bubba Wallace for the top spot after Wallace ran a lap of 49.149 seconds.
Toyotas swept the top five qualifying spots, with Erik Jones, Tyler Reddick and Ty Gibbs completing the top five.
Gibbs faces off in the finale of the In-Season Challenge against Chevrolet driver Ty Dillon, who qualified 26th.
William Byron, Chris Buescher Carson Hocevar, A.J. Allmendinger and Austin Cindric completed the top 10.
Denny Hamlin, who was fastest in practice, was the last driver to attempt to qualify and he crashed his Joe Gibbs Racing machine in turn two.
He will start last in the 39-car field.
