KNOXVILLE, Iowa — With a decisive last-lap victory on the opening night of the 65th NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals, Sheldon Haudenschild not only won the feature but leads the points after the first qualifying night.
The driver of the KCP Racing No. 18 qualified ninth, finished second in the fourth heat and raced from seventh on the grid to win the feature event.
That rewarded him with 481 points out of a possible 500, a relatively low total for a qualifying night leader, but certainly enough for a top-10 starting spot in Saturday night’s $200,000-to-win main event.
James McFadden was second in points after finishing second with a total of 478 points aboard the Tarlton Motorsports No. 21.
The night’s fast qualifier, Kasey Kahne, was third in points with 477.
