Abreu Holds Off Reutzel By .026 Seconds

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — A big day for Rico Abreu ended in victory lane Wednesday at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that Abreu will drive the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 24 with Kubota High Limit Racing next season.

A mere six hours later, he was standing in Whiskey Myers Victory Lane for the 10th time this season in his own Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing outfit — and he made it there in spectacular fashion at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

After leader Corey Day, who made it to the front with several jaw-dropping moves, dropped out due to a flat tire caused by a brake fire on Lap 23, the stage was set for a one-on-one duel between the Kubota High Limit Racing championship leader Abreu, and the top Rayce Rudeen Foundation Rookie of the Year contender Daison Pursley.

Coming down to the last lap, the Driven2SaveLives Battle at the ‘Burg suddenly become a three-way fight out of nowhere and happened to supply the second-closest finish in Kubota High Limit Racing history.

Ultimately, Abreu held on to the top spot by a mere 0.026 seconds over Aaron Reutzel who shot out of a cannon. Pursley was still right with them, crossing there stripe behind by 0.304  seconds.

It was Abreu’s first sprint car victory at Lawrenceburg to go with three USAC National Midget scores at the home of three-story sliders.

In his 99th start with the series, Abreu extended his mark as the winningest driver in Kubota High Limit Racing history with a 22nd score — a season-best 10 of those coming this year.

With nine races remaining, the Abreu No. 24 holds a 24-point advantage over the Ridge & Sons Racing No. 87 and a 39-point lead over the Kasey Kahne Racing No. 49 in pursuit of his first-career national touring sprint car title.

Following podium finisher Aaron Reutzel and Daison Pursley across the stripe at Lawrenceburg was Justin Peck, Brad Sweet, Corey Day, Parker Price-Miller, Chase Randall, Brady Bacon and Tanner Thorson.
