STATESVILLE, N.C. — NASCAR officials have deemed Mike Wallace ineligible to compete in the Daytona 500 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.
MBM Motorsports, which had previously announced Wallace would drive its No. 66 machine in the Great American Race, confirmed the news on Monday night.
Wallace has 11 previous starts in the Daytona 500, but has not run a Cup Series race since 2015 and last competed in a NASCAR national touring series race in 2020.
Because he has not competed on an intermediate or larger track since 2015, NASCAR has deemed the 65-year-old driver ineligible.
“We are devastated for Mike and the Wallace family that this opportunity will not come to fruition,” read a statement released by MBM Motorsports. “For MBM, we must regroup at this late stage with the loss of our driver and sponsor for The Great American Race. Our team is working swiftly to sign another funded driver for Speedweeks in order to still attempt the 67th Daytona 500.”
