INDIANAPOLIS — Sam Mayer will start Saturday afternoon’s Pennzoil 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway from the pole.
Mayer drove his Haas Factory Ford to a lap of 54.014 seconds at 166.623 mph to earn his first pole of the season and first since joining the team during the offseason.
It was Mayer’s fourth career pole.
“I knew that we were going to be really good and I was really confident, this team did a really good job last year and I’m super proud of all of them,” Mayer said. “Our Audibel Ford Mustang was really good today. It’s cool to get Ford another pole this year and we’re doing our job right, so let’s go finish the job. I’ve grown a lot as a person and as a driver and kind of got my craft figured out when it comes to the race in the past year so, hopefully, I can put it into practice and lead every lap.”
Nick Sanchez will start second in the No. 48 Chevrolet, while Mayer’s teammate, Sheldon Creed claimed the third spot.
Jesse Love will start fourth in a Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, while Brandon Jones took the fifth spot in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Veteran Aric Almirola was sixth in another Gibbs entry.
The winner of the past two Xfinity Series races, Connor Zilisch starts seventh in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet.
