CHICAGO — Shane van Gisbergen made it two-for-two Saturday afternoon at the Chicago Street Race.
After having won the pole for Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race earlier in the day, van Gisbergen drove his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to the stop spot during qualifying for Sunday’s Grant Park 165 for the NASCAR Cup Series.
Van Gisbergen turned a lap of 89.656 seconds to claim the top spot and earn his third Cup Series pole in 33 starts in the series.
“Yeah, that was epic,” van Gisbergen said of his final qualifying lap. “Our team did a great job. The No. 88 WeatherTech Chevrolet was ripping really good. I’m a lucky boy, I’ve got some great cars today — both the Cup and Xfinity car. This is pretty special. I’m looking forward to the race tomorrow. Practice wasn’t that great for us, but when we went out for qualifying, the car felt really good. We turned in two pretty good laps.”
It was also the first Chicago street course pole for van Gisbergen, who won the inaugural Cup Series in Chicago in what was his first start in the series in 2023.
Michael McDowell qualified second in the No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. McDowell’s teammate, Carson Hocevar claimed the third sport.
Tyler Reddick will start fourth in a 23XI Racing Toyota, while Chase Briscoe earned the fourth spot in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyoa.
RFK Racing Ford teammates Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher will start sixth and seventh, respectively.
Corey Heim, in a fourth 23XI Racing entry was the only driver to fail to qualify as 41 cars were on hand.
