Gouker Looks Fast In COTA Talent Cup

AUSTIN, Texas — Rookie Nathan Gouker made a clear statement Friday at Circuit of The Americas, leading Free Practice 2 and Qualifying 1 to earn provisional pole position for Saturday’s opening round of the MotoAmerica Talent Cup.

Gouker rose to the afternoon session with a lap of 2:27.710 before setting the benchmark lower again in qualifying to a 2:27.429, concluding a day of steady progression that saw a nearly two second improvement from his opening practice time.

The 14-rider field, competing on identically prepared Krämer APX-350 MA machinery, as part of the “Road to MotoGP” program, showcased close competition throughout the day. As the laps progressed Gouker was joined at the front by Kensei Matsudaira and Sam Drane, the trio consistently registering laps that would separate themselves from the rest of the field.

Matsudaira set the early pace in Free Practice 1 with a 2:28.556, narrowly ahead of Gouker and Drane, before ending the day second on the grid with a 2:27.664. Drane, meanwhile, demonstrated remarkable consistency, finishing third in all three Friday sessions and qualifying with a 2:27.880.

By the end of Qualifying 1, the top three riders were covered by just 0.451 seconds, setting the stage for a pair of races on Saturday.

Jake Paige emerged as a key contender after a strong progression through the day. Fourth in the opening session, Paige jumped to second in Free Practice 2 with a 2:27.996 and ultimately secured the fourth spot on the grid with a 2:28.196, positioning himself firmly in podium contention.

Depth across the field was evident, with the top eight riders in qualifying separated by just over three seconds.

Reese Frankenfield rounded out the second row in fifth, followed by Nathan Bettencourt and Derek Sanchez King. Sawyer Lafayette and Rikard Herb completed the top nine, while local rider Rossi Garcia qualified 11th after making significant gains between sessions.

Saturday’s doubleheader will feature two races that could immediately shape the early championship picture, with valuable points on offer in the opening round of the season.
