A huge crowd, a fascinating course layout and celebrities galore, the inaugural Grand Prix of Arlington had a little bit of everything.
Kyle Kirkwood rose to the occasion and held off four-time NTT IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou to win the event on a course that wrapped around the homes of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and Major Leage Baseball’s Texas Rangers.
Kirkwood was quickest in Friday practice, but suffered a setback during qualifying and started Sunday’s race from seventh position.
The Andretti Global driver showed speed from the beginning and steadily made his way forward. With 16 laps to go, Kirkwood went late in the brakes, and grabbed the lead from Palou entering turn 13.
Kirkwood pulled away Palou and was in position to earn his sixth career IndyCar Series victory and his fifth on a street circuit.
Kirkwood was the third different winner in three races this season and leads the standings.
