The Grand Annual Belongs To Aaron Reutzel

WARRNAMBOOL, Australia — Texan Aaron Reutzel capitalized on a series of unlikely events to win Australia’s most famous sprint car race — The Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic — for the second time on Sunday night.

Reutzel started 12th and was running near the back of the top 10 when an incident involved the leaders.

The slower cars of Tim Kaeding and Ian Madsen tangled, triggering a crash that collected several of the top contenders including leader James McFadden, Cole Macedo and Jock Goodyer.

Reutzel was fourth on the restart with Brock Hallett in the lead.

Reutzel moved past Max Guilford and Matt Egel and chased Hallett until taking the lead on lap 22 of the 40-lap event.

Despite a final red flag when Carson Macedo got upside down, Reutzel led to the checkered flag to earn the $60,000 top prize.

Lachlan McHugh got past Hallett in the closing laps with Dayne Kingshott and Goodyer completing the top five.

The finish:

Aaron Reutzel, Lachlan McHugh, Brock Hallett, Dayne Kingshott, Jock Goodyer, Kaiden Manders, Matt Egel, Max Guilford, Jordy Rae, James McFadden, Hunter Schuerenberg, Marcus Dumesney, Luke Storer, Peter Doukas, Carson Macedo, Todd Moule, Tate Frost, Bradley Vaughn, Cole Macedo, Kerry Madsen, Ian Madsen, Tim Kaeding, Daniel Sayre, Jy Corbet.
