DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The expanded IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge calendar will include another production-based category for the four endurance races on the 2026 schedule.
The BMW M2 Challenge will join the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge’s Le Mans Prototype 3 (P3) cars at four, two-hour races to be held at Sebring International Raceway, Circuit of The Americas, Virginia International Raceway and Road America.
IMSA has revealed multiple updated elements for VP Racing SportsCar Challenge competitors in 2026 to increase different opportunities. This includes the adoption of new generation LMP3 machinery, the four endurance races, and now this single-make category as part of those endurance races.
IMSA President John Doonan hinted at this on a recent episode of the IMSA Endurance Hour Podcast, which was released shortly after the 2025 season finale Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.
“(The endurance races) will give the LMP3 folks a chance to share a car and we’re very pleased that the BMW M2 Challenge will come to IMSA,” Doonan said.
“It’s a single-make car, but to put that car into a multi-class environment is great for entry-level. Immediately, someone is in a multi-class learning opportunity with a faster prototype passing. We’re excited about it and BMW has embraced us kicking it off in North America. The first race that runs in early ’26 at Sebring in March, when the VPRC enduro series kicks off will be the first M2 Challenge race.”
BMW announced the BMW M2 Racing car in early 2025 for racing competition globally in 2026. The new BMW M2 Racing delivers 230 kW / 313 hp to the track and reaches a top speed of over 270 km/h / 167 mph. It is based on the chassis of the current M2 generation, which is enhanced with numerous racing components.

Two drivers can be nominated for each car, and a minimum of one will require a Bronze- or Silver- FIA categorization. Platinum drivers are prohibited.
