Super DIRTcar Series: Season In Review

CONCORD, N.C. — The journey to the 2025 Super DIRTcar Series title came to an end in November, with twists and turns along the way culminating in Mat Williamson’s third series championship.

Along with Williamson’s title, two drivers hit career win milestones, three drivers added their names as series winners, and two drivers cemented themselves as rising Big Block Modified stars.

Triple The Money

Despite not earning a Super DIRTcar Series victory until July, Mat Williamson cruised to his third Series title with his consistency. In 26 points-paying races, the St. Catharines, Ontario, driver finished in the top 10 in 25 of them. His worst finish was an 11th at Thunder Mountain Speedway in May.

Once he got his first win at Land of Legends Raceway in July, Williamson scored another home-track victory at Ransomville Speedway in August and backed it up with wins at Brockville Ontario Speedway, The Dirt Track at Charlotte, and his fourth Billy Whittaker Cars 200 win at Oswego Speedway during Super DIRT Week 53.

“Money Mat” is now the ninth driver to win the Super DIRTcar Series championship three times, joining Matt Sheppard, Brett Hearn, Will Cagle, Jack Johnson, Bob McCreadie, Alan Johnson, Danny Johnson and Billy Decker.

Williamson finished the season with five victories, 21 top fives, 25 top 10s, and 19 podium finishes.

Century Mark

While an 11th series title wasn’t in the cards for Sheppard, that didn’t stop him from stealing storylines throughout the season.

The Savannah, N.Y., driver became the second driver to earn 100 Super DIRTcar Series victories in July with a dominant performance at Autodrome Drummond. It was a fitting track for his 100th victory, as the Drummondville, Quebec, facility was also the site of his first series win in 2004.

“Super Matt” finished the season with six wins, more than any other driver in 2025, including his sixth victory at the Dirt Track at Charlotte, where he has more wins than any other Big Block Modified competitor.

He ended the season with 103 series wins – 38 triumphs behind Brett Hearn for the top spot.

The Wins List

While Sheppard moves closer to the top of the all-time wins list, three drivers earned their spot with their first Super DIRTcar Series victories.

Canadian veteran Mario Clair was the first to complete that task, leading all 100 laps in the Series return to Cornwall Motor Speedway to win the O’Canada 100. It was the Drummondville, driver’s first win in 75 series starts and only his second top five.

Tim Sears Jr. earned a popular victory at Brewerton Speedway during a “race of the year contender” during SummerFAST. The Central Square, N.Y., driver started eighth in the race and methodically worked his way forward. Then, he held off challenges from Alex Yankowski, Peter Britten and Williamson to earn the victory minutes from his hometown.

The third driver who reached Super DIRTcar Series Victory Lane for the first time in his career was Kolby Schroder at Lebanon Valley Speedway during Mr. DIRT Track USA. The Staatsburg, N.Y., driver passed Darren Smith near the race’s halfway point and drove away to earn the biggest win of his career, and a guaranteed starting spot at Super DIRT Week 53.

With Clair, Sears, and Schroder scoring victories, the series is approaching 200 different winners, as 197 drivers have reached victory lane since the series’ inaugural year in 1974.

Kid Rocket

At the beginning of 2025, Alex Yankowski wasn’t sure he’d run the entire Super DIRTcar Series schedule. But after winning the “Big Gator” trophy at Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park and opening the points-paying season with back-to-back runner-up finishes, the Covington Township, Pa., driver decided to make a run for the 2025 title.

That decision proved to be a good one for “Kid Rocket,” who led the series standings until Williamson passed him in July. He went on to finish second on the strength of two wins at Volusia and Can-Am Speedway, 17 top fives and 23 top 10s.

A high mark of his consistency this season was a streak of nine top fives in the first 10 points-paying races.

The Payne

Yankowski wasn’t the only Alex who made a jump in 2025. In his second season on tour, Alex Payne charged to his first podium points finish with a strong second half of the season.

After earning his second consecutive win at Brockville Ontario Speedway in July, the Hopewell, N.Y., driver backed it up with two more wins in November at Georgetown Speedway and The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Payne finished the season with 16 top fives and 20 top 10s, including eight podium finishes.

That includes a streak of four straight top two finishes between Brockville in October, Georgetown and Charlotte.

Five For Friesen

NASCAR Trucks star Stewart Friesen also added a Series milestone to his resume in 2025. With his win at Selinsgrove Speedway in June, the Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, driver scored his 50th Super DIRTcar Series win, a feat only accomplished by five drivers before him.

Friesen ended the season with five wins, adding victories at New Egypt Speedway, Weedsport Speedway (2), and Mohawk International Raceway. He also earned five top fives and six top 10s in eight starts before his season was cut short due to his crash at Autodrome Drummond.

Batman Returns

While there weren’t any milestones accompanied with Peter Britten’s 2025 Super DIRTcar Series season, the Australian driver broke a three-year drought with a return to victory lane.

The “Batman” outdueled Payne on night three of Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals, marking his first series win since he narrowly beat Jimmy Phelps to the finish at Volusia Speedway Park in 2022.

Then, Britten added another to kick off SummerFAST, beating Williamson and Sheppard to the checkered flag, which earned him his first multi-win season as a full-time Super DIRTcar Series driver.
