TUCSON, Ariz. — The CARS Tour West Pro Late Model season opened Saturday at Tucson Speedway with a battle of the Harvicks.
In the end, it was 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick getting the best of his teenage son, Keelan, to win the SoundGear 125.
While Keelan Harvick started on the pole, Kevin Harvick began the race from ninth starting spot. While son showed the way, father diced his way through the field to battle his protégé for the lead during the closing laps, finally making the winning pass and pulling away to win by .743 seconds.
“The strength of my car today was just to drive up off the corner and I’d kind of found a little better groove through (turns) one and two than most everybody,” said the elder Harvick, who last won at the Tucson track in 1995. “I thought my car was better than most everybody’s on the long run anyway. With that 40 some lap run there at the end, I was able to take advantage of rolling that top. It was fun and hopefully the crowd enjoyed it, it’s fun to be in victory lane.”
Keelan Harvick finished second with Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR driver William Sawalich taking third.
The finish:
Kevin Harvick, Keelan Harvick, William Sawalich, Haeden Plybon, Kasey Kleyn, Ken Bonney, Cody Dempster, Kyle Keller, Robby Sawyer, Chase Burgeson, Austin Herzog, Trevor Seibert, Colton Hale, Jeffrey Peterson, Brett Yackey, James Hamlin, Linny White, Jace Hale, Hayden Hoogeveen, Brenden Ruzbarsky, Ethan Ebert, Marc Groskreutz, Ryley Seibert, Nash Goungren, Tanner Emond, Kenna Mitchell, Jaron Giannini, Mia Lovell.
