PENSACOLA, Fla. — After being delayed by weather for 24 hours, the 58th running of the Snowball Derby came to a controversial conclusion Monday afternoon at Five Flags Speedway.
Stephen Nasse took the checkered flag after race officials penalized Ty Majeski for jumping a restart with 12 laps remaining in the 300-lap race.
Nasse’s first Snowball Derby victory came in his 15th attempt at the prestigious race at the half-mile race track. His Anthony Campi Racing No. 51 passed inspection and the race is official
Despite the black flag, Majeski remained on the track and crossed the finish line ahead of Nasse, who was flagged the winner.
Majeski stopped on the start finish line along with the top three finishers and also went to technical inspection where he protested the finish, claiming he won the race.
However, race director Nicholas Rogers said the decision to black flag Majeski will stand.
Nasse won the race on the track in 2019, but was disqualified for an illegal braking system.
Dawson Sutton wound up with the runner-up honors and Jake Garcia charged from his 32nd starting spot to finish third.
Kasey Kleyn and Jake Finch completed the top five.
Majeski led a race-high 225 laps.
