“We underperformed in qualifying, a lot of chaos on the No. 7 side, but it’s doable to win from fifth,” Rossi said. “The tires are still a little bit of a mystery to everyone. We’ll find out in a few hours.
“I don’t have an answer for what the tires will do. We’re flying blind on this one.”
Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing was second at 1:41.8080 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda followed by his Saturday nemesis Will Power of Team Penske in the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet at 1:42.0323.
Power made strong comments about Power and the off-road conditions at Road America on Saturday. Later that night, Road America President Mike Kertscher had one of the Septic System trucks parked in front of Power’s motorhome. Kertscher left the keys in the Septic truck and Power drove it and parked it in front of Dixon’s motorhome.
Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren was fourth in the No. 5 Chevrolet at 1:42.0458 followed by Andretti Autosport driver Kyle Kirkwood at 1:2.2233 in the No. 27 AutoNation Honda.
