SOMERTON, Ariz. – Cocopah Speedway set an all-time car count record Tuesday night, and it was only practice.
According to Cocopah Speedway General Manager Brad Whitfield, there were 238 cars in the pit area for a practice night for the IMCA.TV Winter Nationals. The previous record was last year when 171 cars were on hand for a Winter Nationals race night.
An interesting part of practice night is having a radar setup reading driver’s speed at the midpoint of the frontstrech with a display heading into turn one.
The IMCA divisions showed the following top speeds: hobby stock, 67, stock car, 72, Northern sport mod, 76 and modified, 80. Â
Occasionally a car would show a mile or two per hour faster, but these results were for the fastest cars during multiple laps.
More teams will arrive Wednesday for the opening race night of the Winter Nationals on the big three-eighths-mile at Cocopah.
