PEORIA, Ariz. – Canyon Speedway Park opened its season with the first of four Winter Series events on the quarter-mile Saturday night.
Five IMCA divisions brought 62 cars for the mid-afternoon show.
The $1,000-to-win modified race had Brody Spangler leading five laps with sliders and crossovers dominating the action at the front.
Zachary Madrid used a slider in turn one to take the top spot on lap six and held off any challenges the rest of the way to win.
Late race passes settled the other two podium positions and Devin Fouquette led Josh Cain across the line to complete the top three.
The stock cars had a pack of four cars trying to lead the first couple of laps before Paul Stone used the upper line to take the lead. Stone seemed in control until a yellow with a trio of laps left added drama.
Madrid used the bottom of turn four to lead a lap before Stone again opted for the top line to regain the lead and take the win. Madrid and Joe Schmitt completed the podium.
The Northern sport mod class saw Mark Martini use a big turn three slider on lap one to lead from fourth after one a lap. That lasted five laps before Cam Reimers used a turn two slingshot move to drive under Martini on the backstretch.
Once in front the fast Reimers sport mod was untouchable and he recorded the win. Despite numerous yellows, Reimers controlled the race to earn the win.
Martini finished second and Clay Erickson was third.
Hobby stock racing saw Chandler Dodge use a front row redraw to lead, building a large lead until a yellow with three laps remaining.
That presented no problem as Dodge pulled away on the restart to win over Charles McDaniel and David Jones.
Gary DeWitt won the mod lite main. Sunday afternoon will present the second round of the Winter Series.
