One Killed, Two Hurt In Hartwell Speedway Incident

HARTWELL, Ga. – One spectator was killed and two injured, including a nine-year-old child, during an incident at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway Saturday night.

Sheriff Mike Cleveland told FOX Carolina that a driver crashed on the track and hit a concrete wall. The car climbed the wall and went through a chain link fence into the infield, where the three spectators were standing.

Paul Ballenger, 57, was killed in the incident. In addition to the nine-year-old child, a man in his thirties was also injured. The driver of the race car was uninjured in the incident. 

“Everyone at Hartwell Speedway ask that you please keep those involved in the tragic accident tonight at the Speedway in your thoughts and prayers,” track officials said in a statement posted to Facebook. “We would also like to thank all those who came to the aide of those injured.”
