JAMAICA, Va. – The last time Billy Hubbard came across as the winner in the Victory Lap Pro Late Models at Virginia Motor Speedway, the win was taken away due to being three pounds light at the scales.
But Saturday night Hubbard cleared the scales and score a measure of redemption with a convincing win over Justin Williams.
Hubbard grabbed the lead on the opening lap, and then had to survive several restarts before taking the win.
“This feels good to get back to victory lane after what happened at the last race; we were light, and that’s the rules, but we learned something, and hopefully it means good things for us the rest of the season,” said Hubbard in victory lane.
Hubbard and Matt Glanden led the Victory Lap Late Model field to green, with Hubbard jumping to the lead. Two laps later, Justin Williams grabbed second when Glanden slid up the track in turn four.
Three laps later, Williams began pressuring Hubbard for the lead, each time being turned away. On lap nine, the race’s first caution flew for a stopped Chuck Bowie. By lap 15, Hubbard had worked to a five car length advantage over Williams and the field.
A caution on lap 18 closed the field on Hubbard’s bumper for the restart. On the restart, Williams would take a shot at Hubbard only to lose the front end of his car and allow Hubbard to pull away to a four car length advantage.
On lap 25, Hubbard began to close in on lapped traffic with an eight car length lead over Williams. A caution on lap 29 once again allowed the field to close on Hubbard.
On the restart, Hubbard pulled away by a couple car lengths only to have the caution come out again. On the next restart, Williams stayed close to Hubbard, at least for next lap.
Hubbard then kept four car lengths between himself and Williams as he went on to score his first win since 2014.
Rounding out the top five were Williams, Corey Almond, Glanden and Jared Powell.
In other action, Brett Adkins of scored his first Truckin Thunder Sportsman win of the season by holding off Joe Weiss of over the final 10 laps.
Meanwhile, Chris Arnold pulled a slider on Francis Jarrelle of to take the lead on the opening lap of the Budweiser modified 30-lap feature and take home a convincing win over Hunter McClendon; and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car 25-lap feature, Cory Bradley led flag to flag to score his second victory of the season.
