CORNWALL, Ontario – Reigning Super DIRTcar Series champion Mat Williamson returned to victory lane at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night in modified competition.
Dany Gagné led the field of 31 modifieds at the start of the Mohawk Express Modified feature over Yan Bussiere and Mario Clair. The caution was out on lap six as Kevin Hamel spun in turn four.
Gagné held the lead with David Hebert jumping to second and Bussiere holding third. Traffic was quickly a factor as Hebert was able to pass Gagné for the lead on lap 16. While Hebert was pulling away in front, Luke Whitteker was on the move as he passed Bussiere and Gagné within two laps and got second with 23 laps in the books.
Some position shuffling took place by lap 30, with Clair and Williamson now in the top five. Caution was back out on lap 33, setting up an important restart that saw Hebert lead Whitteker and Williamson.
Hebert had company in Williamson with 10 laps to go. Dalton Slack brought the caution out on lap 44, which was followed by a major crash on lap 46 as Carey Terrance hit the frontstretch wall, with Tyler Givogue rolling his car to bring out the red flag. All drivers involved were uninjured.
When the green flag waved again Williamson challenged Hebert for the lead. He was able to pass Hebert with a turn four move and capture his second feature of the season at Cornwall. Hebert finished second, with Mike Bowman taking the final step of the podium.
In other action, Robert Delormier claimed the sportsman feature while Bruno Richard topped the pro stock main event. The mini stock feature was won by Alexis Charbonneau and Jason Powers won the vintage feature.
