Friesen Fights Off Sheppard For $53,000

FONDA, N.Y. — Stewart Friesen got the upper hand of a racelong battle with Matt Sheppard to win the Fonda 200 Saturday night at Fonda Speedway.

Friesen earned $53,000 for winning the prestigious event. It was his third victory of the season at Fonda and the 88th of his career.

Steve Bernier led the first 14 laps, with Friesen taking the lead on lap 15. He led until lap 91 when Sheppard took the point. Sheppard led only one circuit before Friesen was back in front through lap 95.

Friesen led laps 96 to 100 and Sheppard led from lap 101 through lap 129 when Marc Johnson slipped into the lead.

Friesen ripped past Johnson on lap 129 and set the pace until Sheppard went back to the front on lap 150. Sheppard led 26 laps until Friesen took control for good on lap 176.

Sheppard finished second, with Tyler Dippel, Mat Williamson and Tim Fuller rounding out the top five.

Payton Talbot won the 602 sportsman feature.
