ATTICA, Ohio — Cap Henry took the lead at Attica Raceway Park Friday night and blistered the Attica dirt for 30 laps to capture the season-opening Attica Fremont Championship Series feature race.
Henry rode the top right at the cushion of the track to sail to the victory, slicing through lapped traffic on the way to the $4,000 payday.
Thirty-six sprint cars showed up to fight for the 24 starting spots for the A-Main event. When the preliminary events settled, Henry and Caleb Griffith would bring the field of winged warriors to the start.
Blasting down into turn one on the start cars would fan out as Chris Andrews and D.J. Foos would touch and Andrews would flip turn the track to red conditions. A complete restart and off they went Henry muscling his way to the point with Griffith right there.
Three more yellow flags would slow the pace within the first nine laps for lone incidents. From the lap nine restart Henry would fly out to the point as Griffith stayed up until the halfway point when Henry started stretching it out.
Nate Dussel would stay up in third as Cale Conley and Craig Mentz shuffled their way into the top five as laps clicked off. Henry put on an Attica clinic as he sliced through lapped traffic keeping Griffith at bay until the checkers flew and the top five finished just the way they are stated.
“That thing was real sporty in our heat race, I knew we had a pretty good hot rod” said Henry. “We got fortunate to start in the front row, we just tried to hammer it out. Tried to be patient and not burn the tires off, then we got the five to go and I just started dropping the hammer down. So, here we are. The track was good, normally, a lot of times, we don’t get that fast of a race track here at Attica. It was fun, I hope we get a couple more here this year. Lapped traffic wasn’t too bad, I think I came off my line once or twice. I was just trying to be smart in lapped traffic and not get myself in a bad situation. Just caught the Lapped traffic at the right time.”
Griffth finished second.
“I tell you what, that was a man’s race track tonight,” said runner up Griffith. “That curb was about 18 inches wide at both ends. Those guys were superb tonight, they deserved to win. I had one shot at Cap, but those guys were really good. We raced our butt off for that one, once I got into the curb to deep and had it pointed at the pit stands, then I was racing for position in traffic and got it pointed at the infield. It was a razors edge, if you could keep it on the outside it was pretty fast,” finished Griffith.
Matt Irey, Attica’s 2016 track champion, has been knocking on the door of victory lane all season, recording a pair of runner-up finishes and a third. It all came together Friday as he led all 25 laps for his fourth career Attica victory. The win kicked off the Attica-Oakshade Raceway Late Model Series Challenge for 2020 as well.
Three-time Attica 305 sprint champion Paul Weaver took the lead on lap 17 and drove to his second straight win and 51st of his career at the track. Coupled with a win last Saturday at Fremont Speedway, Weaver has won three features in a row.
