MARIBEL, Wis. – 141 Speedway followed a Tuesday night practice session with the opening race night of the Captain Of The Creek event Wednesday, which will pay $5,000 to the winner of the 50-lap finale on Thursday.
Wednesday racing for sport mods offered two rounds of heat races, with the second round inverting the lineup from the initial round of draw heats. Passing/finishing points were added from both heats and the top-10 were moved to Thursday’s main event field. Those 10 will redraw for the first five rows.
Also racing on Wednesday were IMCA sanctioned modifieds and sport compacts with complete shows.
Sport compacts drew 17 cars and had a very competitive main. James Riske led two laps before it became a show between Brian Watzka and Adam Broehm.
Four lead changes between the pair and 11 laps of side be side racing ended when Broehm became a DNF to prematurely end the lead trading duel and Watzka got the win.
Benji LaCrosse started outside front row in the modified 20-lap finale, quickly establishing a significant lead. Johnny Whitman and Wyatt Block each applied pressure, but Lacrosse dealt successfully with the pursuing pair to win.
Block finished second and Whitman was third. A 35-car field was on hand.
Last year’s inaugural Captain In The Creek sport mod special saw Algona, Iowa, driver Colby Fett rank first in points ahead of a 61-car field.
History was repeated when Fett won both rounds of heats, taking wins from the pole and after starting 10th He did have company after Lake City, Iowa, driver Doug Smith matched Fett’s performance by winning heats from third and eighth to tie in high points.
Third in points was the winningest sport mod driver in 2019, Sioux City, Iowa, driver Cody Thompson who won 44 times last year.
Jonathon Logue was fourth and Jayden Schmidt took 5th in points. Joining those five in the redraw were Gabriel Zellner, Elijah Koenig, Tyler Sobiesczyk, Craig Corner and Timothy Warner.
