Track of the Day: Dominion Raceway

History: When one race track closed, another emerged to take its place.
Dominion Raceway opened for competition in 2016, four years after nearby Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Va., closed. The track, which opened in 1952 as a dirt track before being paved in 1953, was shuttered as the local neighborhoods grew up around it.
However, Old Dominion Speedway owner Steve Britt was determined to keep racing going. He found a plot of land in Thornburg, Va., and began the process of building a new race track in 2013. His dream was realized when Dominion Raceway opened for business in 2016.
The new, modern facility is home to a four-tenths-mile paved oval, a drag strip and a two-mile road course — all with modern amenities.
The paved oval typically plays host to NASCAR-sanctioned weekly racing from March through October, headlined by the late model stock car class. Nick Smith was the inaugural track champion in the late model stock car class in 2016. Doug Barnes Jr. has won a pair of track titles (2017, ’19) and Jeff Oakley claimed the track title in 2018.
Other divisions that also compete regularly at Dominion Raceway include Dominion Racer (limited late models), Modifieds, Dominion Stock and UCAR.
