EAST AMWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Vintage stock car displays will fill the Flemington Speedway Historical Society race tent in their exhibit at the Hunterdon County 4-H & Agricultural Fair Aug. 25-29 at the Roger K. Everitt (South County Park) Fairgrounds.
The frame of the Gary Stanton built modified that Ken Brenn Jr. and Jimmy Brenn drove to much success at Flemington Speedway will be at the fair, along with some of the original sheet metal. This is also the modified that legendary NASCAR driver Bobby Allison drove at Flemington Speedway as a special guest on June 8, 1985.
While the car is not yet restored, it will be on display for the first time since FSHS President Dennis Tretter purchased and saved this piece of Flemington Speedway history. The restoration process of the Stanton modified is set to begin at the conclusion of the fair.
There will also be a large Billy Pauch display, as well as his memorabilia. The recently restored “L” car will be at the fair on Sunday only, and Pauch will also be guest appearing for the A.M.S.A. mini stock reunion. The Mataka 3N1 Silver Crown car as well as the Bob Pickell 300 will be on display for the duration of the fair.
Another vintage racer that will be making its debut under the Flemington Speedway Historical Society race tent is the Howie Cronce 9C. Fair attendees will also see race cars owned by FSHS members Artie Conk, Alan Creveling, Gary Bauer, George and Joe Henshaw, Wyatt Jacobus, Ray Liss, Kevin McPherson, John Menzak, and Marty Resnick. There will also be vintage Flemington Speedway racing movies being shown inside the tent.
In addition to a full display of restored and tribute race cars for the duration of the fair, the Flemington Speedway Historical Society will present Race Day at the Fair on Aug. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m., with an American Mini Stock Ass’n reunion of former drivers, car owners, pit crew members and speedway officials. The reunion is open to everyone, so visitors are encouraged to stop by the FSHS race tent to hear their stories and share memories of the speedway, which closed in 2000.
Reunion guests are coming from several different states. Tom Gray, a former A.M.S.A. mini-stock racer and artist, created the reunion artwork, which FSHS will present to each registered reunion guest.
A.M.S.A. racers Jay Aten, Dolf Battle, Bob Burns, Jon Clemens, Tom Cregge, Alan Creveling, Chuck Dublick, Bob Foder, Tom Gray, Newt Hartman, Dale Houseworth, Mike Grombir, Rich Guy, Danny Kasper, Mark Koegel, Dave Laire, Pete Madsen, Doug Ostwald, Pauch, Al Rogers, Chuck Schneider, Robert Serridge, Jim Smith, George Unfried, Ray Vernon, Ernie Worth, and others are currently rostered to be in attendance at the reunion. The emcee duties for the event will be shared by Lou Brunell, former AMSA President, Bobby Stull, former AMSA starter, and FSHS President Tretter.
There will also be a Purple Party at the Fair on Aug. 29 from 3 to 4 p.m. Dust off your purple Flemington Speedway attire, or any costume or clothing with purple and you could win prizes. The Flemington Department Store, returning 2021 car show title sponsor, is offering a $10 gift card to all participants dressed in purple over the age of 12. In addition, FSHS is awarding a $100 American Express Gift Card to its contest winner, and a $50 American Express gift card to second-place. The prizes will be awarded at 4 p.m.
