THORNBURG, Va. – Mason Diaz made the trip to Dominion Raceway a successful one by sweeping a pair of 60-lap late model stock car features on Saturday evening.
Diaz joined a stacked field of competitors, including Josh Berry, Peyton Sellers and Mike Looney, Saturday evening at Dominion Raceway. Diaz was fast from the moment he unloaded and rolled to the pole with a 15.282-second lap over Berry.
The invert placed Diaz third, but it only took him six laps to take the lead in the first feature. He led the rest of the way ahead of Sellers and Daniel Silvestri.
Instead of starting eighth due to the invert for the 60-lap feature, Diaz started at the rear of the field after his team changed a blistered tire. While Diaz expertly picked his way through the field during the first 15 laps, Sellers and Silvestri raced door-to-door for more than 15 laps of green flag racing.
Finally, Sellers got clear of Silvestri for a moment and then he found himself door-to-door with Berry for about 10 more laps. With Sellers and Berry battling for the lead, Diaz worked his way up to third and right on the bumpers of the leaders.
Eventually, with 21 laps to go, Diaz got by Sellers for the lead and drove away for his second win of the night to complete the sweep. Sellers was runner up again followed by Silvestri in third.
“Peyton and Silvestri were going crazy door to door and that was my chance I needed to take to sneak in there,” Diaz said. “I know Peyton’s tires were hot from racing Silvestri and I used that to my advantage and put him on the high side. I knew with those hot tires he couldn’t up top there and we pulled away.”
In the twin Dominion Stock class features, Gary Burke swept both races on the evening. In the UCAR division, Jon Pritt got his first victory.
