Rahal Draws No. 1 Spot For Indy Qualifying

INDIANAPOLIS – Graham Rahal of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will be the first driver to make a qualifying attempt for the 104th Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday.

Rahal draw the No. 1 spot during Friday afternoon’s qualification draw. His Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammate, 2017 Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato, will be the second driver to make a qualifying attempt.

Scott Dixon, the current NTT IndyCar Series championship leader, will go from the sixth position during qualifying Saturday. Josef Newgarden, the defending series champion, will be the ninth driver to make a qualifying attempt.

Alexander Rossi, winner of the 100th Indianapolis 500, will be the 12th driver to make his attempt and be followed by two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso. Ryan Hunter-Reay, who had the fastest four-lap average speed Friday at the 2.5-mile speedway, will be the 14th driver to attempt a qualifying run.

Marco Andretti, who turned the fastest lap during Fast Friday, is scheduled to be the 28th of 33 competitors to make a qualifying attempt on Saturday.

Other notables include three-time Indianapolis 500 polesitter Ed Carpenter (19th to qualify), 2016 Indianapolis 500 polesitter James Hinchcliffe (20th to qualify), defending Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenaud (27th to qualify), 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan (29th to qualify) and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves (32nd to qualify).

J.R. Hildebrand is scheduled to be the last driver to make a qualifying attempt.

Saturday’s qualifying attempts will set positions 10-33, with the fastest nine drivers advancing to Sunday to battle for the pole position.
