INDIANAPOLIS – Drivers in the NASCAR Xfinity Series proved to be quick learners on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course after two practice sessions were held Friday without incident.
Former Champ Car Series and NTT IndyCar Series competitor A.J. Allmendinger was the fastest driver in Friday’s first session with a best lap speed of 97.392 mph in his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet. Austin Cindric was the fastest overall driver in the final practice session with a best speed of 97.850 mph in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford.
Cindric was second quick in the first session at 98.804 mph. Allmendinger was second quick in the final practice at 97.344 mph.
Justin Haley of nearby Winamac, Ind., was third in the final session at 96.753 mph in another Kaulig Racing Chevrolet. Another Indiana native, Chase Briscoe of Mitchell, Ind., was fourth at 96.534 mph. Justin Allgaier rounded out the top five in the final session at 96.530 mph.
Jeb  Burton drew the pole position for the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard. Michael Annett will join him on the front row. The starting lineup was set via a random draw due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pennzoil 150 is Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. It will be preceded by the NTT IndyCar Series GMR Grand Prix at 12 noon ET.
Both races will be televised live on NBC.
