MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Sixteen-year-old Sammy Smith has joined Wilson Motorsports to compete in select asphalt super late model events this year.
Smith will pilot the No. 22 super late model for the team owned by Donnie Wilson beginning with the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway on Feb. 4-13.
“I’m appreciative and eager for the opportunity to drive for Wilson Motorsports,” said Smith. “I’ve gotten to know Donnie on and off the track and have so much respect for him. He runs a first-class operation and prepares fast and nice race cars.
“I’m equally excited to have Bond Suss as my crew chief and I’m looking forward to working with him,” Smith added. “I have a lot to learn and Bond will certainly contribute to my growth as a driver. I’m grateful to have TMC Transportation and Toyota Racing Development in my corner. They’ve both been instrumental in my development and I appreciate their support.”
Last season Smith drove Kyle Busch Motorsports’ No. 51 super late model in more than 20 events, including the full CARS Super Late Model Tour schedule, the Winchester 400 and the Slinger Nationals.
He finished the season ranked third in the CARS Tour standings. He also won in his first race with Kyle Busch Motorsports during the 2020 edition of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.
“We are excited to welcome Sammy Smith to the Wilson Motorsports team,” said Wilson. “We strive to always bring top performing equipment to each and every race in order to accomplish our ultimate goal, to win. We believe that Sammy will make a great addition to our team and we look forward to our first race in 2021 in our Rowdy Manufacturing chassis.”
