ELKO, Minn. – After a successful 2012 visit during the Thunderstruck 93 weekend at Elko Speedway, the Big 8 Late Model Series will once again compete on the ultra-competitive three-eighths-mile paved oval located just south of the Twin Cities.
Unlike last season, which was an invitational non-point event, this year the event will be part of the Big 8 Series Championship Season. A 58-lap feature event scheduled for Sept. 21 will pit the top drivers from across Wisconsin and Northern Illinois head to head with the Elko Speedway Big 8 division regulars. Last season saw local rising star Dylan Moore bested former track Champions Jake Ryan and Jon Lemke after a three way dog fight for the checkered flag over the closing fifteen laps.
“I thought the racing last year was spectacular, the traveling guys had their hands full with the strong showing of Elko drivers, it will be interesting to see what a second visit does for our out of town guys.” Stated Series Director Gregg McKarns. “Tom Ryan and his staff rolled out the red carpet for our teams and we all had a lot of fun, on and off the track. It is such a neat event, at a showcase facility, for a great cause.”
The Thunderstruck event is held in memory of Dan Ryan, who was very supportive of the Big 8 Late Model concept at its inception.
With the addition of this event, this completes the 2013 Big 8 Late Model Schedule, which will begin in just over two weeks at Rockford Speedway during the 36th annual Spring Classic on April 14.
