Dippel maintained the lead on the restart, but once again Burton stayed on Dippel’s bumper as the field bunched up behind them. Within three laps Church began to make his presence known by using the high side to drive all the way up to battle Burton for second.
A few times Church nearly cleared Burton, but the two continued to battle for several laps as Dippel attempted to stretch his lead. With 15 laps left, Dippel was still out front, but Burton and Church were still looking for a way around him.
On lap 139 Burton made his move, looking under Dippel for the lead. Burton was led the lap at the stripe and cleared Dippel out of turn two on lap 140 to take the lead. However, behind the fight for the lead, Shaw had charged to third.
On lap 141 Shaw charged alongside Burton, taking the lead for the first time to start lap 142 as Church followed him past Burton and into second. As Shaw tried to hold off Church the caution flag waved for the final time on lap 145 when defending Southern Super Series champion Daniel Hemric stopped in turn four.
Church got the jump on Shaw during the restart, taking the lead as the came out of turn two. Shaw fell in line behind Church, looking for a way to retake the lead over the next few laps. Church maintained the lead as he drove under the white flag, but Shaw was right behind.
Shaw looked low on Church going into turn one, but he couldn’t make the move stick. He followed Church down the backstretch and as they went through turns three and four the final time Shaw gave Church enough of a bump to move him out of the way, allowing Shaw to beat Church to the finish.
“It was just one of those races. It got a little dicey there inside of 25 (laps) to go,” Shaw said. “I put us in position and they (his crew) gave me a good enough car that we had the lead. Then we had that caution late and the 7 (Church) tried to steal it from me. He jumped the start and beat us down into one there.
“I worked him over and worked him and just didn’t have the room, so I made the room at the end there and took back what I thought was mine,” Shaw said.
Church, who won his first PASS South event last fall at Hickory and is the current PASS South championship leader, finished second.
“It was a good race and a good point’s night. I don’t know if this one just kind of slipped away,” Church said. “Everything just kind of fell into place. I tried to save as much as I could but then again you’ve got to get going to. It was a hard fought battle and we’ll get ’em next time.”
Peltier finished third, followed by Irvan and Dippel.
Walker Yates won the companion PASS Pro Late Model Series 50-lap feature.
