The Rocketman is going SRX Racing.
The Superstar Racing Experience, an all-star invitational series founded by Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham, confirmed Thursday that Ryan Newman is among four former NASCAR Cup drivers who will take part in series’ sophomore effort full-time in 2022.
Newman, whose 20-year NASCAR career effectively ended at the conclusion of the 2021 season, will be joined by 2000 Cup champion Bobby Labonte, Greg Biffle and two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip.
Labonte and Waltrip competed in SRX full-time last year. Biffle competed as a ringer in a few races.
The confirmation of the NASCAR drivers’ involvement in the series follows the news of current and former IndyCar stars who will also take part.
2014 Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay will compete full-time, joining returning drivers Paul Tracy and Marco Andretti. The Associated Press reported Tony Kanaan would run in five races and that defending Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves will be in three.
Indy Lights driver Ernie Francis Jr, who won the SRX race at Indianapolis Raceway Park last year, will be in two events. Two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden will compete in his hometown race at the Nashville Fairgrounds.
Like the inaugural season, SRX’s 2022 schedule will be made up of six races.
It begins June 18 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
Over the next five weekends, the series will visit South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia, Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri and Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio.
#NASCAR will be well represented in SRX's second season!@GBiffle , @Bobby_Labonte and @MW55 are returning for another year of competition.
