SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – Matt Bowling drove by Matt Waltz with five laps left and held on to win the annual Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown for late model stock cars Thursday evening at South Boston Speedway.
Waltz had started on the pole and dominated the 200-lap race, but his car began to give up speed in the closing laps of the event. Bowling, who started second, was able to chase him down in the closing laps. Waltz tried to hold him off, but Bowling made the pass stick on the inside with five laps left to pick up the victory.
It is only the second time in the seven year history of the event that doesn’t compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has won the event. The last time that happened was in 2010, when C.E. Falk III won at Southside Speedway in Midlothian, Va.
Waltz settled for second after leading nearly the entire race. Nick Smith was third, followed by defending race winner Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth.
Denny Hamlin announced before the start of Thursday’s event that the race would return to South Boston Speedway in 2015.
