FREMONT, Ohio — Donny Schatz started sixth on Saturday night at Fremont Speedway and charged to his 21st World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of the season.
Schatz needed only nine laps to make it to the front of the 28-car A-main. He held off Caleb Griffith on restart after restart in the 40-lap feature to earn the win and cut his deficit to 52 points in the overall World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship battle.
Ohio natives dominated the top five, with Griffith holding on to finish second with Bryan Sebetto in third, Dale Blaney in fourth and fan favorite Jac Haudenschild fifth.
Schatz drove the STP/Armor All J&J to fourth after just one lap as Griffith jumped to the lead over second-place starter and series championship leader Daryn Pittman.
Only six events remained in the season going into the night so the race-within-the-race for the championship was in full swing as Schatz worked his way around Pittman on a restart with six laps complete and set his sights on Griffith. By lap nine Schatz was in command but Pittman was keeping pace.
Then, on a restart with 14 laps complete and the two championship contenders on the front row, disaster struck Pittman as he spun to a stop, bringing out a caution. Luckily the rest of the field was able to avoid him and he restarted at the tail of the field and would drive his way back up to finish ninth, minimizing the damage in the standings.
Schatz continued to lead as Griffith kept close tabs on the five-time series champion. Schatz maintained an advantage and by the checkered flag he was 1.234 seconds ahead of Griffith.
