Kahne Back In A Sprint Car For Knoxville Invitational

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Kasey Kahne Racing confirmed Monday afternoon that team owner Kasey Kahne will make his return to sprint car competition on Friday night.

Kahne will drive the No. 9 Karavan Trailers entry in the invitation-only World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event scheduled to be held at Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway.

The team announced Kahne’s comeback as “one night only” in a Tweet posted to the official KKR Twitter account just after noon ET.

He’ll take the reins in place of regular driver and Australian ace James McFadden.

Friday night’s event is the first race for the Outlaws since the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in February. The COVID-19 pandemic brought sports worldwide to a halt in March.

McFadden drove the No. 9 at Volusia to open the season, earning one top-five and two top-10 finishes in three features during the tripleheader weekend.

The Knoxville race will be Kahne’s first start behind the wheel of a sprint car since he was involved in a crash at Pennsylvania’s Williams Grove Speedway in March of 2019.

That incident left Kahne with undisclosed injuries and McFadden has filled in behind the wheel of the No. 9 since late May of last year, earning several 410 sprint car wins and the 360 Knoxville Nationals crown during that timespan.
