Fogged Out: National Open Prelim Postponed

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — The 62nd Weis Markets National Open presented by Sage Fruit got off to a foggy start — literally.

In the latter portion of Friday’s World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event, dense fog became a threat. Just as the Dash for the pole was about to begin at the half-mile dirt track, officials called the eight-car field to the pits.

That was the last of on-track action of the night.

The prelim, worth $12,000 to win, was postponed to Saturday prior to the $75,000-to-win main event. Friday’s portion will be completed once hot laps get underway at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Prior to the postponement, action was aplenty at The Grove.

Defending National Open winner Brent Marks began the evening with the quick time award at 16.499 seconds, the seventh of his career with the Outlaws.

The eight drivers in the dash includes Marks, Giovanni Scelzi, Kasey Kahne, Buddy Kofoid, Daryn Pittman, Anthony Macri, David Gravel and Chase Dietz.

Following the random draw, Dietz snagged the No. 1 spot.

When the dash begins on Saturday, the starting order will be:

1. Dietz. 2. Scelzi, 3. Marks, 4. Kahne, 5. Macri, 6. Kofoid, 7. Pittman, 8. Gravel

The last chance showdown has also yet to be determined from Friday’s lineup. Shark Racing’s Jacob Allen will lead the LCS 18-car field to the green flag. Notable names in the showdown include Sheldon Haudenschild, Bill Balog, Logan Schuchart, Cory Eliason, Danny Dietrich, Carson Macedo and Landon Crawley.

Only four drivers will advance to the feature from the LCS.
