SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. — Chris Windom grabbed the lead in the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget standings with a dominant victory Saturday night at Arizona Speedway.
The reigning USAC midget champion entered the night tied with Buddy Kofoid atop the standings but led all 30 laps of the Western World Championship main event to claim the victory and grab a 13-point advantage over Kofoid with seven races remaining.
Windom’s seventh victory of the season came aboard the CB Industries No. 89.
“We’re in a championship battle here, so it makes it even sweeter,” Windom acknowledged. “But (team owner) Chad (Boat) and I want to win races too. This is our seventh USAC win this year, so that’s pretty cool. That’s what we’re here for; we want to win a championship and we want to win as many races as possible. We had a lot of smack talkers after we won the championship last year, so I’d like to shut them up and go win another one.”
Zach Daum challenged Windom through the middle stages of the race, but his car’s engine expired with 10 laps remaining, elevating fast-qualifier Cannon McIntosh, who started sixth, to the runner-up slot.
Thomas Meseraull, Tanner Carrick and Kofoid, who started 11th, rounded out the top five.
