SPEEDWAY, Ind. – Fred Gormly, whose team captured the 2016 USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series title with driver Chris Windom, died Wednesday at the age of 75.
His black, white and gold No. 98 and 99 champ cars were mainstays on the Silver Crown trail throughout the mid to late 2010s.
The RPM/Gormly team first reached Silver Crown victory lane in 2014 with Bobby Santos at Gateway Motorsports Park, the first of seven victories that spanned until the team’s last triumph with Windom at Eldora Speedway in the 2016 finale, where they clinched the series title.
In between 2014 and 2016, Gormly’s team won several notable races with the top drivers in the game, including three consecutive 4-Crown Nationals victories at Eldora Speedway in 2014 with Jerry Coons Jr., in 2015 with Christopher Bell and in 2016 with Windom. The team won on the dirt half-miles of the Belleville High Banks in 2015 and in 2016 at Williams Grove Speedway, both with Windom.
On Labor Weekend in 2016, Windom and Gormly teamed up for a win on the at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, one of their four wins together.
RPM/Gormly finished third in the Silver Crown owner standings in 2014 and in the runner-up spot in both 2015 and 2016.
