ALGER, Wash. — Trey Starks doesn’t race on a national tour, but he’s found himself in the spotlight with consecutive High Limit Racing victories in his home state of Washington.
Driving his family-owned No. 55x, Starks won Wednesday night at Grays Harbor Raceway and Thursday at Skagit Speedway.
Thursday’s victory came on the opening night of the Sage Fruit Nationals, which will pay $102,626.26-to-win on Saturday night, making it the highest-paying sprint car race on the west coast this season.
Starks held off Shane Golobic and Justin Sanders for the victory on Thursday night.
“I can’t really describe the feeling right now,” Starks said. “To win one is one thing, but two in a row is a whole different thing. We have things going really well right now and our car is really good. I was kept honest there the whole race. Justin was breathing down my neck, traffic was tough, Shane was good at the end and it made me really guess on where to go.
“It was another night where the track changed a lot throughout the main. I didn’t feel like the bottom was going to be the best all the way around and I didn’t necessarily feel that good down there, but we were faster down there.”
Starks, who counts two All Star victories and a Knoxville Nationals preliminary triumph among his career accomplishments, says his confidence is high entering the weekend.
“It is confidence. Starting on the front row with these guys is a huge help,” Starks noted. “These guys are the best in the business. That being said, when you start on the front row you gotta take advantage of it. It was a good night for us, we made good points. We are learning more and more every time we hit the track. Our confidence is really high and everything is going right. We’ll keep riding this wave until it rides itself out.”
Starks believes racing locally keeps his team fresh for big races.
“I think that is why we are having success right now,” Starks explained. “There really is not that much pressure. We had a relaxed couple of weeks. We were able to come back fresh and that’s the whole key to it. These guys have been beating up and down the road for a while. They are the best in the business, but our stuff is right and we are fresh and everything is going well.”
